Statement |
Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary is a sanctuary which provides a permanent home for primates retiring from biomedical research, zoos, universities, pet stores, and private residences.
We believe
- All animals have rights.
- Animals should be free.
- Animals have the right to be free from pain.
- Animals used by humans have the right to be alive and cared for after they have served out their usefulness to humans.
- We can all make a difference, one being at a time.
We:
- Advocate on behalf of primates who do not have a voice of their own.
- Help prevent cruelty to animals through the operation of a primate sanctuary.
- Educate the public about primates through presentations to schools, community organizations, and community events.
- Educate the public about the need to respect all animals.
Story Book Farm is a place of safety. We offer freedom from fear. We are a place of healing and recovery from trauma. In sanctuary care, we encourage friendships between residents. We encourage exploration and freedom of choice. We give back the ability to make decisions and control events that affect residents' lives. Our human caregivers exercise deep listening skills to help address the residents' wants and needs. We strive for humility and parity and look at each day as a learning opportunity.

Sherri Delaney President and Co-Founder Sherri is the founder of Story Book Farm along with her husband Len. Her background is in law enforcement with the majority of her training focusing on domestic violence. She is a published author on the history of policing and during her career she has been tasked with opening and operating a police museum. Always with a love for animals she evolved to study the plight of animals in animal testing labs, as well as the exotic animal trade in Canada and the issues the animals face. Her love for primates helped her focus on them and to open the only monkey sanctuary in Canada. Sherris belief is that she is not special; she is simply one person trying to make a difference in our world.
Len White Co-Founder Len is in the electrical trade but is very handy when things need to fixed. Len started out by supporting Sherri but soon became drawn in by the monkeys. His first love started with Suzie who is always trying to catch Len with her tail as he works in the monkey house. Without Len, the monkeys would not have the home they do as he is always building on their behalf.
Leslie Barrett Chairperson and Barn Manager Leslie has been self employed for 23 years in the fire and flood damage restoration business. She began volunteering with the sanctuary in 2008 and became the barn manager at a later date. Leslies favorite part of being involved with the sanctuary is making a difference in the lives of innocent, vulnerable primates who need our care and protection.
Kim Meehan Vice-Chairperson Kim has a degree in zoology and is a keeper at the Toronto Zoo. She currently works with the cheetahs, baboons, and mandrills and has in the past worked with the gorillas who are still very close to her. Kims compassion has taken her to Cameroon where she worked at the Mvog-Betsi Zoo sharing husbandry practices with zoo keepers. She is currently the president of the Canadian Association for Bushmeat Awareness and is instrumental in informing the public on issues surrounding the commercial bush meat trade in Africa. Kim has also volunteered for the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, worked on behalf of the Fauna Foundation in Montreal and Ape Action Africa in Cameroon.
Rachelle Hansen Secretary Rachelle is a Performance and Learning Consultant for KPMG, and in her spare time, she has devoted her life to advocate on behalf of those who do not have a voice of their own. Rachelles large heart and strong beliefs have taken her to Cameroon where she has cared for orphaned and troubled chimpanzees; and to Montreal where she worked with chimpanzees rescued from biomedical research at the Fauna Foundation. She is also a volunteer and collaborator with many local organizations such as the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada and Free the Children. A consultant by trade and a global citizen by heart, this combination makes Rachelle a wealth of knowledge and abilities.
Charmaine Quinn Director Charmaine works for the University Health Network in Toronto, and donates all her spare time to helping animals in need. Her weekends are spent at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, the Toronto Zoo and Story Book Farm. Her love for orang-utans has her volunteering her time at the Toronto Zoo as an interpreter. Charmaine frequently travels to Borneo to work at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre where she cares for orphaned and ex captive orangutans. Charmaine is also involved with the Balikpapen (Borneo) Orangutan Society headed by Dr. Anne Russon of York University.
Jenn Ross Director and Barn Manager Jenn works full time as a Human Resources professional who has training in Health and Safety. She has been a dedicated volunteer and barn manager for a number of years and has a wealth of experience to share. Jenn is constantly educating herself about issues involving animals and sharing her knowledge with others with the hopes of promoting change.
Jen Middleton-Smythe Director and Barn Manager, Successor Jen has been intimately involved with the operation of Story Book since the early days. She is currently one of our three barn managers and is always ready to take on new and daunting tasks. Jen has been selected as the successor of Story Book Farm.
