Pockets Warhol

White-headed Capuchin
Age: 20 yrs

Pockets was a pet in British Columbia. He was a well-loved and well-cared-for pet, much luckier than some monkeys who do not have owners who know how to look after them. His owner did everything she could to give him the best life possible outside of the rainforest - he had toys, good food, indoor and outdoor enclosures, even a pet guinea pig and a television.

After 12 years, Pockets' owner was finding herself challenged to continue to look after him. Upon finding SBFPS, she flew over and stayed with Pockets for a week to get him comfortable in his new home. She was confident that he would get everything he needed, and he has been with us ever since.

It was not until 2011 that Pockets began to paint, as a form of enrichment. Our volunteer Charmaine ("Pockets' muse") spends hours with her little friend encouraging him to use his hands and feet, his tail, sometimes a cloth, to paint his impressionistic masterpieces. Sometimes he is in the mood - other times, not so much. He does have a real artistic temperament. Sometimes he would rather eat the paint. Or perhaps, he would rather play ball, or try to grab you with his tail...

Charmaine has used Andy Warhol as inspiration, since Pockets and Andy share a striking resemblance (especially in hairstyle!). She presents Pockets with the colours of certain Warhol creations (like Marilyn Monroe or Campbells Tomato Soup) and Pockets uses those colours to create his own interpretations of the well-known Warhol works.

Pierre

- Olive Baboon (8 yrs)
- We believe he was a part of consolidated zoo and was not wanted by the purchaser
- He arrived in a crate with no straw or water but looked healthy
- Even with his large and rather impressive stature and his two inch teeth, he was still scared
- We learned that he was French so we spoke a mix of French and English until we knew he understood us

Sweet Pea

- Olive Baboon (9 yrs)
- Sweet Pea is from a roadside zoo
- She came with boredom associated behaviours like self-mutilation. These behaviours have become better with care, toys and time but they will never go away completely.
- She loves faux fur and fur coats; she grooms them and sleeps with them it comforts and calms her.

Yoshi (deceased 2009)

- Japanese Macaque: (age unknown: elderly)
- It is our belief that Yoshi came from a lab: he has severe scarring on his left wrist and arm consistent with lab testing

Lexy

- Japanese Macaque: (8 yrs)
- Lexy came to Story Book Farm from another sanctuarywe made a frantic call after Yoshi was having a difficult time mourning Kayko
- Lexy was human raised
- She was confined to a laundry basket when she misbehaved. Duct tape was used to secure the laundry basket...this left her several human caused problems

Julian

- Japanese Macaque: (age unknown)
- Came to us through another sanctuary
- Little information regarding his history was given, however, he does have behavioral problems such as self-mutilation

Mr. Jenkins

- Black Handed Spider Monkey: (8 yrs)
- He had been taken from his mother when he was 3.5 months old, (the natural time to spend with a mother is approximately 3 years)
- Came to a petting zoo that purchased him believing that he could do tricks but he could not.
- He was sold to a private home where he was kept isolated and alone in a bedroom. He consequently learned to interact badly with people by pulling hair, pinching, grabbing and threatening to bite

George

- Black Handed Spider Monkey: (41 yrs)
- George came with Suzie. They had been locked in a dog kennel for several days prior to arriving at Story Book Farm
- George had a hard time getting around at first, but we put up lots of rope to help him. In time his movements got better
- He had several bacterial infections that took about a year to clear up

Suzie

- Black Handed Spider Monkey: (30+ years)
- Suzies story is much like Georges
- She had several bacterial infections when she arrived that took about a year to clear up
- She had a lump on her cheek that was later determined to be an abscess from rotten teeth
- She is a very sweet girl

Nan

- Hamadryas baboon: (34 yrs)
- Nan came from the zoo circuit
- She is an older girl and has vision problems
- Dont worry the red bumps on her neck arent tumors or sores, they are cheek pouches packed with goodies!

Chelsea

- Hamadryas baboon: (17 yrs)
- Chelsea also came from the zoo circuit Nan and Chelsea arrived together
- She has some boredom associated behaviours
- She likes to watch TVin particular Mark Hebscher

Amigo & Pablo

- Common marmosets: (Ages Unknown)
- The marmosets came from a Canadian zoo
- The story given was that the zoo was attempting to form marmoset colonies. The castoffs came to the sanctuary
- Pablo had severe head injuries
- All became happy once their injuries healed

Mickey

- Black-penciled marmoset: (Age Unknown)
- Came to SBFPS in December 2008
- Caring individuals rescued Mickey from a pet store and contacted Story Book Farms

Komoto & Rosie

- Brown Lemur: (ages unknown: adult)
- Komoto did not know how to climb or jump when he first got to the sanctuaryall he knew how to do was run in circles. This led us to believe he was kept in a very small cage
- His coat was dull and his tail was not bushy. After some awkward attempts and a little practice he sails across the room with great ease now
- He is very friendly
- His right arm had to be amputated but he sails through the air as if nothing was ever wrong
- Rosie came from a zoo connection

Razzle & Kizmet

- Ring-tailed lemur: (age unknown: elderly)
- When we got Razzle she was in a dog kennel with her dead partner: he hadnt survived the trip. When her dead partner was removed Razzle became frantic and tried to grab at him as he lay outside her cage. We put the dead lemur back in with Razzle to comfort her and we took them home. Razzle mourned her friend for three days before we removed him and even then she was unsure.
- Razzle slowly started showing signs of illness and became very weak
- The whole family spent days feeding her by syringe every couple of hours waiting and hoping for the different medications to kick in. For the most part her little head would lay in our hands as we fed her
- She didnt trust us for a long time because of the forced handling she has had to endure but we constantly work to restore as much faith as possible
- Kizmet: surprise baby (2 years old)

Kye

- Ring-tailed lemur: (8.5 yrs)
- Kye came to us through a zoo connection
- He appears to be the least affected by human kind

Smokey, Bandit & Keanu

- Ring-tailed lemur: Brothers(6 yrs)

Cheeko

- Black Tufted Capuchin(Elderly)
- Cheeko is an elderly man who came to us when his home, a privately owned green house in Ontario was closing.
- Cheeko had lived a solitary life for a time after his enclosure mate, a Rheus Macaque passed away.
- Cheeko loves food and his mirror. He can often be seen sharing his dinner with his friend in the mirror.
- He doesn't like it when his neighbor, Pockets teases him....or when Pockets teases the humans in the monkey house.
- Cheeko has lost most of his teeth so we have to make sure he gets food that he can eat.

Buddy and Remel

- Ring-tailed lemur: Brothers(age unknown)
- Buddy and Remel came to the sanctuary from British Columbia after a pet store owner offered to re-home them with the sanctuary.
- Both boys were quite small upon their arrival but are gaining weight and muscle mass more each day.
- They are enjoying their new home and can be heard calling out to the other lemurs at the sanctuary who call back in response.
- Ericka and Kim have been working on target training with Buddy to help resolve some behavior issues.
